There are three ways to load an image into Pixaro:

  1. Click the "Load Image" button in the center of the screen
  2. Drag and drop an image file directly onto the canvas
  3. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+O (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+O (Mac)

Supported File Formats

  • JPEG/JPG: Most common web and camera format
  • PNG: Lossless format with transparency support
  • TIFF: High-quality uncompressed format
  • RAW formats: CR2 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), ARW (Sony), DNG (Adobe)

3. Basic Adjustments

Exposure

Controls the overall brightness of your image.

Contrast

Adjusts the difference between light and dark areas.

⚠️ Warning: Extreme contrast values can cause clipping (loss of detail) in highlights or shadows. Watch your histogram!

Highlights

Recovers detail in bright areas of your image.

Shadows

Reveals detail in dark areas of your image.

💡 Pro Tip: For balanced exposure, try reducing highlights (-50 to -100) and increasing shadows (+30 to +60) before adjusting overall exposure.

Whites & Blacks

Fine-tune the brightest and darkest points in your image.

Clarity

Enhances mid-tone contrast for local detail "pop".

4. Color Tools

White Balance

Adjust the color temperature and tint of your image.

Temperature

Tint

💡 Quick Fix: For photos shot indoors under fluorescent lights, try: Temperature ~4500K, Tint +10 to +20.

Saturation & Vibrance

Saturation

Increases or decreases the intensity of ALL colors equally.

Vibrance

Smart saturation that protects skin tones and already-saturated colors.

HSL (Hue, Saturation, Luminance)

Target specific color ranges for precise adjustments.

Available Color Channels

  • Red: Roses, red clothing, brick
  • Orange: Skin tones, sunsets, autumn leaves
  • Yellow: Sunflowers, gold, sand
  • Green: Foliage, grass, nature
  • Aqua: Tropical water, teal colors
  • Blue: Sky, water, denim
  • Purple: Flowers, twilight sky
  • Magenta: Flowers, neon lights

Hue Adjustment

Shift a color toward a different hue (e.g., make blue skies more cyan or more purple).

Saturation Adjustment

Make specific colors more or less vivid without affecting others.

Luminance Adjustment

Brighten or darken specific color ranges (e.g., brighten blues to make sky pop).

💡 Portrait Tip: To enhance skin tones, increase Orange Saturation (+10 to +20) and Orange Luminance (+5 to +15). Reduce Blue Saturation (-20) to calm backgrounds.

5. Tone Mapping (Advanced)

Tone mapping compresses the high dynamic range of your image to fit within display limits while preserving detail and maintaining a natural look.

When to Use Tone Mapping

Filmic RGB

Professional tone mapper with film-like characteristics.

⚠️ Important: Only use ONE tone mapping module at a time (either Filmic RGB or Sigmoid, not both).

Sigmoid

Simpler tone mapper with excellent color preservation.

6. Detail Enhancement

Sharpening

Enhances edge definition and perceived sharpness.

💡 Recommended Settings:
  • Portraits: Amount 40-60, Radius 1.0, Threshold 3
  • Landscapes: Amount 80-120, Radius 0.8, Threshold 0
  • Web Images: Amount 60-80, Radius 0.5, Threshold 2

Noise Reduction

Reduces grain and digital noise, especially in underexposed areas.
